Current Trends in the Spatial Development of Siberian Federal District Regions

Spatial development of the country plays a significant role in ensuring consistency in the approach to the balanced development of regions, economies, and the use of natural resources. The aim of this article is to study the spatial problems of the Siberian Federal District. The Siberian Federal District is a region with rich resource and infrastructure potential of strategic importance for the country. New challenges affecting the key vector of the macro-region’s development are formed in the context of dramatic fluctuations in the modern economic environment. Despite the existing positive background of sustainable socio-economic growth, there is a negative trend of changes in the main economic and social indicators in the region. The article presents various approaches to the study of the problems of spatial development of the Siberian Federal District. Statistical data on various indicators, including their comparison with other federal districts, have been given to investigate the problem. The problems of differentiation of subjects by socio-economic indicators are noted. Among the problems of spatial development, the following are noted: low density and unevenness of population settlement, slow pace of diversification of macro-region economy, problems of transport accessibility of territorial formations of Siberia. As a result, various strategies for the spatial organization of the economy are given: the alignment of sectoral profitability, the development of transport accessibility of entities and the use of high-tech, innovative products. The conclusion about the necessity of development of perspective branches of economy depending on material and non-material resources of regions and needs of population is given. The future strategic orientation of the Siberian Federal District, an important platform for economic security of the country, depends on the effective management of the spatial development of regions.
