This article is devoted to the problems of interaction between Russia and Western countries in the context of a hybrid war. The relevance of the issues discussed in the article is determined by the extreme cooling of Russia’s relations with European countries and the United States against the backdrop of a special military operation in Ukraine, while the armed conflict in Ukraine itself is one of the components of the hybrid war waged by the collective West against Russia. In the interests of ensuring the national security of Russia and international security, it is necessary to develop a new methodology for the interaction of powers — world and regional leaders. The aim of the article is to develop a comprehensive strategic approach to the interaction between Russia and Western countries, which are currently acting as Russia’s geopolitical opponents, based on a vector approach. Along with the latter, the provisions of the theory of geopolitics, the theory of national security, and the realistic theory of international relations were used as a methodological base. As a result of the study,  a new comprehensive strategic approach based on an inverse vector model (within the framework of the vector approach) which allows solving the key foreign policy tasks of Russia are proposed, as well as practical recommendations are given aimed at shaping such characteristics of the foreign policy of the Russian Federation as proactivity, focus on active change geopolitical reality in favor of the interests of national and international security, the intensification of project and counter-hybrid activities. The authors state that by changing the model of foreign policy behavior and the paradigm of relations with the West, Russia will be able to realize the possibilities of preventive and long-term policy to form a loyal foreign policy environment. A positive consequence of applying the approach may be the expansion of the near segment of the zone of Russia’s geopolitical interests (primarily the post-Soviet space), the solution of key problems in domestic politics, the exit from partial international isolation, and the mitigation of the threat of a direct collision with the NATO bloc in the format of a proxy war.
