The aim of this paper is to alert the authorities and educational community to the need for the schoolchildren to be familiarized with the key goals of sustainable development in Russia and all over the world. It has been noted that sustainable development is one of the most discussed issues among modern political leaders and business representatives, at conferences, in analytical reviews and academic publications. Analysis of social sustainability in terms of production development, provision of food and clean water, and health effects of clean environment is made through these discussions. The authors also note that the progress in this direction would be relatively slow and several generations would have to address these issues. That is why it has been proposed to familiarize schoolchildren with the sustainable development components and to guide them on choosing appropriate careers. This should be reflected in the National Project of Russia “Education”. It is shown that the UN sustainable development goals and national projects of Russia correlate quite well with each other and are mainly focused on similar challenges. One of the key tasks under the UN initiatives and national projects of Russia is production of “affordable and clean energy”. Attaining some other sustainable development goals fully depends on this task accomplishment. The Russian and State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom initiative to achieve several development goals through a source of clean atomic energy, used as a basic energy source, is considered. At the same time, clean energy production will allow addressing the main challenges of today — environmental pollution and climatic phenomena.
