The coronavirus pandemic at the beginning of 2020 had a great impact on the condition and further development of practically all areas of global economy including tourism. There has not been a similar severe crisis in tourism business since the Second World War. However, any crisis has not only negative consequences. The article examines new possibilities and challenges of this serious test for the entire tourism market. Among these possibilities and challenges are acceleration of digitalization processes of tourism services, a more proactive implementation of modern technologies (e.g. big data, artificial intelligence, mixed and augmented reality), use of ideas from impression economy, actualization of individual client approach as well as ecological aspects of touristic product, geographic expansion of tourist routes, etc. Besides an increasing importance of travel safety is expected (including sanitary and epidemiological conditions of the place of stay). Tourists will start to prefer private tours in small groups in internal resorts. The article also examines specific measures of state support which were implemented towards objects of tourism business in our country in the spring of 2020. The effectiveness of these measures will largely determine their worthy recovery from the crisis situation. It is clear that after the pandemic the perception and consumption psychology in general are bound to undergo a significant change, furthermore a new phase of competition will begin in tourism which will lead to an entirely new distribution of resources in this market.
