Digitalization of the economy requires availability of sustainable development planning tools. In this regard, it seems relevant to formulate the methodological foundations for conducting a quantitative assessment of economic processes. The article formalizes the content of the «external market» category, which is one of the constituents of the basis for the regional economic system and has a significant impact on its performance. Fixing the category involves conducting a study which evaluates the impact of the region's foreign trade on labor productivity. The methodological apparatus of the study used methods of comparative analysis, economic and mathematical modeling (regression analysis, correlation analysis, factor analysis, index methods), statistical data processing methods, as well as a specially developed application. In the research process, the following tasks were solved: taking into account world experience, the composition of the category «external market» was fixed; the layout of quantitative indices characterizing the indicators of labor productivity and trade was performed; the experiment on a number of subjects of the Russian Federation confirmed the efficiency of the proposed model. The developed tools can be used to conduct a systematic analysis of macroeconomic indicators and develop recommendations for achieving sustainable development goals.
