The article analyzes the causes and consequences of the modern educational system crisis as well as the current state of continuous education in the knowledge economy, where the key institution is the system of additional education. It was revealed that, firstly, the coverage of additional professional education is gradually expanding, but still remains insufficient, secondly, the positive results of the reform can be attributed to a significant improvement in the system of supplementary education for children; thirdly, many goals, especially in the field of adult education, have not been achieved: the demand in the labor market for the system of continuing professional education remains low. The study of the current state of the additional education market has shown that the market of educational services, as well as the introduction of the continuing education for adults concept, is in the early stages of formation. It is assumed that stimulating the development of the market for additional adult education should be undertaken by the state, since the expected effect of its actions may be significantly greater than that of the companies' investments in education in conditions of high labor mobility in Russia.
