Social Projects of the Russian Orthodox Church: Prospects and Contradictions

Alexander Yu. Polunov

Ph.D., School of Public Administration, Lomonosov Moscow State University.

After the collapse of the USSR with its unwieldy, but comprehensive social security system social problems became especially urgent. The collapse of the state was also accompanied by a dramatic shift in world view and rising spiritual uncertainty for a large segment of population. The role of the Russian Orthodox Church, claiming to be the primary charity organization in the country, has consequently grown. The article examines and evaluates the social work of the ROS.

Keywords

Russian Orthodox Church, the patriarch, social work, charity.
