The authors look into the Western, primarily the American, approach to the presentation of the 2017–2018 protests in Iran. The article describes the protest events and analyses their causes. The authors conclude that, despite the existing social and economic causes of discontent among certain social groups, the major driving force behind the protest movement in Iran and the media coverage of the protests was an external controlling power — the geopolitical rivals of the Islamic Republic, namely the U.S., Israel and Saudi Arabia.
