The article is dedicated to the phenomenon of inequality and its impact on the sociopolitical process in the modern world. After the collapse of the real socialism and an economic transition of many countries to the market system, the rate of inequality has risen considerably. This situation contradicted the ideological postulates, on which the new models of world order were based. The rising inequality inside the Western countries led to the dangerous situation of social division and catalyzed the processes of segmentation, resulted in mutual marginalisation of social groups, which differ in their standards of living. In conclusion, the author claims that the modern world needs a profound reconsideration of the concept of “equality”.

Keywords

Equality, ideology, ideological tool, social stratification, Western countries.
