This article examines the main ways to monitor cycling traffic, gives practical examples of their use in various cities of the world and presents their comparative analysis. In addition, the author gives general recommendations on developing a methodology for monitoring and analyzing the development of city cycling. In many cities around the world, a bicycle becomes a popular mode of transport, and bicycle infrastructure is taken into account in the transport strategy. In some Russian cities the potential for the development of cycling projects is high as well. Projects for the development of bicycle infrastructure require both a preliminary analysis of potential demand and a subsequent evaluation of the return on investment. A key tool for such an analysis is monitoring of the amount of cycling traffic. Thus, the review will be useful in the implementation of projects for the cycling infrastructure development, in particular, for conducting preliminary studies of the demand for future infrastructure, as well as for assessing the dynamics of the city cycling development.
