In this article, the author analyses some new materials about the life and creative career of M.Ya. Ostrogorski (1854–1921) — an outstanding Russian political thinker, one of the founders of the modern theory of political parties. The documents were found by the author in the Manuscripts Department of the National Library of Russia (St. Petersburg), and were never investigated or presented to the scientific community before. The new information was discovered in three of Ostrogorski’s letters which weren’t published earlier, and in the correspondence of his relatives — father, brother Alexander, sisters Anna and Adelina, etc. The author believes that these materials shed a new light on Ostrogorski’s creative evolution, his motivation, the practical and political landmarks of his research project. In particular, the author comes to a conclusion that the beginning of the second («foreign») stage of the thinker’s creative evolution should be assigned not to 1883, as it was previously to be, but to 1882. The author proves that Ostrogorski’s aspiration to participate in practical political activities appeared not after his return to Russia in 1902, but much earlier, in the 70–80th of the XIX century, when he worked in the Ministry of Justice, and it continued during his stay in France. The personal characteristics of M.Ya. Ostrogorski given by his relatives add some interesting details to the existing psychological portrait of this scientist as a person who was infinitely devoted to science and ready to defend his conceptual conclusions uncompromisingly.
