Quasi-religious Terrorism and Counteraction to It in the European Union in 2001–2013: The Communication Aspect

The threat of religious terrorism, mainly based on manipulation of Islamic terms, is growing all over the world. This fact highlights the relevance of the article. For the first time in contemporary history the terrorist organization (ISIS) aims to establish its own state. At the same time, it is necessary to keep in mind the political grounds of such organizations and not to identify them with a particular religion. The author describes such organizations, similar to “Al-Qaeda”, as “quasi-religious terrorism”.

The article presents an analysis of communication aspect of the activity of quasi-religious terrorist organizations in the European Union. The author examines the main goals and areas of the terrorists’ communications, as well as their intended audiences. The analysis is based on materials of the terrorist organizations and open access publications of the EU law enforcement agencies. The author also examines the basic communication areas of the European law enforcement agencies and public organizations in their counteraction to quasi-religious terrorism.
