The authors reflect on a new book by V.A. Nikonov, “The Russian Matrix”. The key question of the book is the question of what Russia actually is and what the main trends of its historical development are. The long history of the Russian state is analyzed on the basis of research processing a significant amount of documentary material and historical literature of various nature. The article examines the scientific potential of the book and the author’s positions on a number of conceptual issues of Russian history.
