This article analyses the phenomenon of childlessness grounded on the sociological research carried out in different countries. The context of profound modification of modern family institution serves as the background for the evolution of conjugality and parenting. There are two different approaches to the phenomenon of voluntary childlessness. First, childlessness can be the result of conjugality market mechanisms as well as marginalization of some social groups that prefer not to parent without appropriate partner. Second, voluntary childlessness is proved to be the integral life scenario part for some couples. Finally, the authors of the article suggest their methodological recommendations on voluntary childlessness study in Russia as well as point out the phenomena factors and indicators.
