The Duties of a Chief Secretary of the Academy of Sciences of USSR: Academician V.P.  Volgin and His Practice

The article examines the duties of a chief secretary of the Academy of Sciences in USSR. The position existed since the founding of the Academy, and the duties of chief secretary were expanded over the following two centuries. V.P. Volgin was the chief secretary in 1930–1935, during the pyears of restruturization of the Academy and its “sovietization”. He was not choosen randomly for the position — even before taking it he was known as a good administrator and a “staunch Marxist historian”.
