Modern Quantitative Economic Analysis: Kohonen Self-organizing Maps (SOMs)

The emergence of quantitative, particularly statistical, methods was one of the main tendencies in the XX century economics. Recently, new quantitative methods are used alongside the classical ones. Of particular importance are neural network models, including the self-organizing maps (Kohonen maps). The author explores the Kohonen’s approach, proves its expedience and defines its limitations.
