Immigrant Labor Practices

Georgy R. Kartashov

Graduate student, School of Public Administration, Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The article examines the labor component of the migration process and analyzes the typical immigrant labor practices in large cities. Since major cities need labor, due to both the natural decline in population and the growing supply on the labor market. Immigrants, on the other hand, are ready to take the available jobs. However, due to the chaotic nature of the migration process in modern Russia, it is accompanied by several negative side effects, such as undocumented migrant labor and changing ethnic composition of cities, etc. International experience shows that both parts — the cities and the immigrants — will continue to change and adjust to each other. That is why it is so important to help shape this process on every level (especially in legislation) and implement a coherent, careful demographical policy.
